Dishwasher Issues

Things that should not be put in the dishwasher

The Plumbing Pro technicians often work for homeowners with plumbing issues in the kitchen. We install new faucets, water pipes and garbage disposals. We can connect your dishwasher and refrigerator to water and sewer lines. We even work on gas lines for ranges.

Here are some ideas that might keep your dinnerware, pots, pans, utensils and dishwasher in the best shape possible. Did you know, some things should not be placed in the dishwasher? Below is a simple list that we hope is helpful to you.

  • Cast iron pans should not be washed in a dishwasher, nor should you use soap on them. If you do use soap or the dishwasher you can ruin the natural seasoning of the pan. Instead you should use hot water and a non-abrasive scrubber.
  • Non-stick pans are best hand washed. If you wash them in a dishwasher the non-stick coating can be completely lost.
  • Crystalware can be affected by dishwasher detergent and heat can potentially create cracks. Always wash by hand.
  • Good Knives can dull much quicker when you use a dishwasher. You should wash and dry good knives by hand.
  • Some wooden utensils are at risk of warping or losing their finish.
  • Cooper pans can suffer color changes when washed by harsh detergents in a dishwasher.
  • Soft and hard plastic items can melt due to high temperatures. If you must wash them in dishwasher, place plastic items on the top shelf.
  • Never wash aluminum items in the dishwasher as they may discolor.
  • Insulated mugs should not be washed in dishwasher. The space between the inner and outer layers may be filled with water, Or the adhesive used to assemble them may release and break the mug while the glue is then sent down the drain causing problems.
